Dr. Coen Heijes is an Assistant Professor at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Economics and Business, specializing in interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of Arts/Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds a PhD in Culture and Communication and multiple advanced degrees in Theatre Studies, Shakespeare, and Anthropology. His research focuses on Shakespearean performance, racial and ethnic representation, leadership ethics, and multiculturalism. Current projects include studies on Shakespeare, blackface, anti-Semitism, and sustainability governance.
Education: BA in Theatre Studies, MA in English Language/Literature, MA in Cultural Studies (Anthropology), MA in Shakespeare Studies, MA in Shakespeare and Theatre, PhD in Culture and Communication.
Research Interests: Shakespearean presentism, racial stereotyping in performance, cross-cultural communication, ethical leadership, and the societal impact of cultural traditions like 'Black Pete.' He has published widely on these topics and serves on editorial boards for Multicultural Shakespeare and the British Shakespeare Association.
Teaching: Courses on Shakespeare, leadership, ethics, and performance at the University College Groningen and Honours College. Involved in innovative pedagogical approaches integrating societal challenges across disciplines.
Media Engagement: Frequently addresses public debates on Dutch cultural traditions and racial representation through media contributions, including discussions on Black Pete controversies.
