Clive Clayton is a Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stony Brook University, New York. His research focuses on applying surface science tools to study industrially relevant surfaces and interfaces, particularly in corrosion resistance and sustainable materials development. He leads the Laboratory for Surface Analysis and Corrosion Science and serves as Director of the Institute for Sustainable Development and the Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence (SPIR) program.
- Roles: Director of Institute for Sustainable Development, Founder of SPIR program, former Department Chair (1991-1993), former Associate Dean of Engineering (1993-1997)
- Education: Ph.D. in Materials Science (1976), University of Surrey, UK; B.Sc. (Hons) in Materials Science (1973), University of Surrey, UK
Clayton's research spans nanoscale protective films, ion implantation for surface modification, chromate conversion coatings on aluminum alloys, and microbial impacts on material degradation. His work also addresses sustainable composite materials for building industries in developing regions through corporate partnerships.
Scientific Awards:
- SERDP Project-of-the-Year Award (2015)
- Fellow, Electrochemical Society (2004)
- Monbusho International Fellowship (1998)
- Scientific Research Council Fellowship (UK) (1973-1976)
Through the SPIR program, Clayton has facilitated over 1,700 high-tech projects with 230+ companies since 1994. His laboratory developed specialized surface spectrometers and electrochemical analysis facilities.
