Dr. Clio Rubinos is an Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. She serves as Director of the Post-acute Symptomatic (PASS) clinic and Co-Director of the Global Health Neurology Elective Rotation. Dr. Rubinos is a neurointensivist with dual training in Epilepsy and Neurocritical care, specializing in EEG monitoring and management of acute neurological conditions in critically ill patients.
Her educational background includes a Doctor of Medicine from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, a Master of Science in Clinical Research from The Medical University of South Carolina, Neurology Residency and Internal Medicine Internship at Loyola University Medical Center, and fellowships in Neurocritical Care at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and Clinical Neurophysiology – EEG at New York University Langone Medical Center.
Dr. Rubinos' research focuses on ICU-EEG applications, status epilepticus management, and epileptogenesis following brain injury, with emphasis on biomarkers, therapeutic approaches, and patient outcomes. She has developed significant expertise in EEG interpretation in critical care settings and its clinical applications. Her work bridges clinical neurophysiology and critical care neurology, with particular attention to acute brain injury management and seizure disorders in critically ill patients. She has published extensively on EEG monitoring in neurocritical care, prognostication in brain injury, and management of status epilepticus.
Her recent publications demonstrate an evolving research trajectory incorporating global health perspectives and addressing pandemic-related neurological challenges. The consistent focus on EEG monitoring in critical care settings, prognostication in acute brain injury, and management of status epilepticus reflects her specialized expertise. Her work spans both clinical application and methodological refinement in neurophysiological monitoring, with increasing attention to resource-limited settings and global health applications.
- Simmons Scholar, UNC School of Medicine providing three to five years of salary support, structured mentorship, and career development
- SIREN MAGNETIC Hub Junior Faculty Subaward from Duke Emergency Medicine supporting her development as a clinical researcher
Dr. Rubinos serves as Site Primary Investigator for the Clinical Care EEG Monitoring Research Consortium and GCS-NeuroCovid Consortium, and as Principal Investigator for the Post Acute Symptomatic Seizure Investigation and Outcome Network (PASSION) Consortium. These leadership roles demonstrate her commitment to multicenter research collaborations focused on improving outcomes in neurocritical care. Her Simmons Scholarship provides significant career development support while the SIREN award advances emergency care through clinical trials networks.
Through her directorship of the PASS clinic and involvement in global health initiatives, Dr. Rubinos has established clinical and research pathways for post-acute neurological care and international neurology education. Her work in resource-limited settings demonstrates a commitment to expanding access to quality neurocritical care globally, reflecting her passion for global health neurology and ICU-EEG applications in diverse healthcare environments.
