Cliff Smyth is a faculty member in the Department of Mind-Body Medicine at Saybrook University, part of the College of Integrative Medicine and Health Science. He holds a PhD in Mind-Body Medicine (2018) from Saybrook, alongside certifications in Applied and Clinical Hypnosis (2019) and Health and Wellness Coaching (2013). Prior to his faculty role, he served as a student mentor, adjunct faculty, and Post-Doctoral Teaching Fellow at Saybrook. His academic career spans over three decades, including teaching Feldenkrais Method courses since 1991 and lecturing at San Francisco State University on somatic education.
Dr. Smyth’s research focuses on somatic practices, embodied learning, and interdisciplinary applications of the Feldenkrais Method. He has contributed to professional organizations such as the International Feldenkrais Federation (IFF), serving as President and Editor of the Feldenkrais Research Journal. His teaching portfolio includes Movement Modalities for Wellbeing, Somatics: Body-based Approaches to Mental Health, and doctoral capstone courses. He actively participates in university anti-racism initiatives and curriculum development.
His publications explore somatic education, metaphors in learning, and case study methodologies. While no formal awards are noted, his leadership roles and extensive contributions to somatic education highlight his professional standing. He advises doctoral committees and mentors students across disciplines, emphasizing community-oriented and humanistic approaches to education and healthcare.
Dr. Smyth’s work extends to community development through teaching English as a second language, community arts, and writing programs. He is a member of the Feldenkrais Guild of North America and the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis.
