Clayton Hilmert is Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at North Dakota State University, directing the Social Psychophysiology & Health Lab (also known as the Mind, Body, & Baby Lab). His research examines mind-body-environment interactions in health contexts with primary focus on stress-health relationships.
Research Focus: Dr. Hilmert investigates psychosocial stress mechanisms (including life events, anxiety, and daily hassles) impacting physical health, specializing in cardiovascular responses during stress and pregnancy-related health outcomes. Current projects explore blunted diastolic blood pressure reactivity and psychophysiological pregnancy adaptations using social psychological methodologies.
Publication Trends: Recent 2023 conference presentations reveal emphasis on cardiovascular stress biomarkers and population-specific stress responses, demonstrating integration of behavioral medicine frameworks with community health applications through Society of Behavioral Medicine and regional psychology conferences.
Academic Leadership: As department chair, Dr. Hilmert mentors graduate student Garrett Byron (first-author at national conferences) while expanding undergraduate research opportunities. His lab actively engages in community outreach including free blood pressure screenings at Red River Market and recruitment initiatives for prospective NDSU psychology students.
Research Infrastructure: The lab maintains active collaborations with the Duggan Lab and participates in university-wide initiatives like the featured NDSU psychology major video series, utilizing facilities in Minard Hall 126C48 for psychophysiological stress testing and pregnancy health studies.
