Prof. Dr. Claudia Wiesemann is a leading Professor in the Department of Medical Ethics and History of Medicine at the University of Goettingen. She serves as Principal Investigator for multiple significant research projects, most notably the DFG Research Unit FOR 5022 Medicine and the Time Structure of the Good Life (2021-2025), where she also leads Subproject 5 on Ethics of Reproductive Medicine and the Central and Integration Project. Her research spans several major interdisciplinary projects including an ERC-Grant on Non-invasive prenatal genetics and genomics, research on preventing discrimination in transgender youth, and previous work on stem cell research ethics and tissue legislation in the EU.
Wiesemann's research focuses on the complex interrelationships between medicine, ethics, and temporal structures of human life. Her work explores how medical concepts, technologies, and practices intersect with practical orientations and normative ideas about the temporal structures of human life. She examines these connections across multiple life stages - from reproductive medicine in middle age to healthcare for older people. Her research employs a methodologically innovative synthesis of philosophical-ethical, socio-empirical, and hermeneutical approaches to understand the temporal aspects of the good life within medical contexts.
Her publications reveal a strong focus on the temporal dimensions of medical ethics, with recent work examining reproductive timing, the philosophical underpinnings of good life concepts, and the relationship between medical interventions and life course temporality. She has made significant contributions to understanding how temporal aspects shape ethical considerations in reproductive medicine, stem cell research, and end-of-life care.
Wiesemann has been instrumental in major collaborative research efforts, including the TISS.EU project (2008-2011) which evaluated EU legislation on human tissue procurement and storage, and the ClinhiPS project (2016-2018) analyzing stem cell research ethics. Her work demonstrates a consistent commitment to bridging theoretical bioethics with practical medical applications through interdisciplinary collaboration.
Her research methodology emphasizes empirical and hermeneutically informed ethics, combining philosophical analysis with social science methods to develop a more comprehensive understanding of medical ethics in real-world contexts. This approach has positioned her as a leading voice in German and European bioethics discourse, particularly regarding the temporal dimensions of medical decision-making and ethical considerations.
