Claudia Rapp is a distinguished Professor in the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at the University of Vienna and currently serves as Director of the Institute for Medieval Studies at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (since 2022). She previously held roles such as Vice-Director of the same institute (2014–2021) and Director of its Byzantine Research Division (2012–2021). Her academic career includes tenures at UCLA (1993–2011, progressing from Assistant to Full Professor) and Cornell University (1993–1994 as Hutton Assistant Professor).
Her research focuses on Byzantine social and religious history, cultural history, manuscript culture, and Late Antiquity. Notable awards include the Wittgenstein Award (2015), British Academy Fellowship (2017), and membership in prestigious academies like the Royal Academy of Belgium and Göttingen Academy of Sciences.
Rapp has held visiting professorships at institutions including Oxford University and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. She has contributed to major editorial projects, such as Moving Byzantium, and served on international academic boards and grant panels (e.g., ERC Starting Grants).
