Dr. Claudia Benham is an ARC DECRA Research Fellow at the School of the Environment, University of Queensland. Her research focuses on marine ecosystems, environmental policy, and social-ecological systems. She investigates topics such as Reef stewardship, ecological grief, and the governance challenges of industrial development in coastal zones. Her work emphasizes the intersection of human values, environmental change, and policy effectiveness.
Key research themes include:
- Social-ecological impacts of industrial projects
- Climate change adaptation strategies
- Marine conservation and policy design
- Ecological grief and mental health responses to environmental loss
Her recent publications (2020–2025) analyze frameworks for sustainable coastal development, governance of migratory species, and community engagement in conservation. A central theme is the need for transdisciplinary approaches to address complex environmental challenges.
Dr. Benham holds the prestigious Australian Research Council (ARC) DECRA Fellowship. Her work has been applied in contexts such as the Great Barrier Reef, Gladstone, and Papua New Guinea fishing communities.
Her research integrates policy analysis, community participation, and ecological science to create actionable solutions for marine ecosystem management and climate resilience.
