Claudia Avalos is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at New York University (NYU), affiliated with the Department of Chemistry within the College of Arts and Science. She holds a B.S. from California State University, Chico, a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and completed postdoctoral research at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland.
Her research focuses on solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and nitrogen-vacancy (NV) magnetometry to study spin physics and functional properties of photoactive materials such as ferroelectrics, perovskites, and organic chromophores. Key projects include characterizing spin dynamics in optically excited systems and investigating structure-property relationships in energy materials.
Awardees include the Marię Sklodowska-Curie Actions Seal of Excellence (2017) and the ACS Petroleum Research Fund Grant (2024), alongside an NSF CAREER Award (2024). Her lab, the Avalos Group, develops novel spectroscopic methods for material analysis and explores applications in solar cells, catalysis, and environmental chemistry.
She leads the Magnetic Resonance @ NYU initiative and maintains a lab at the Silver Center (Room 704). Contact: claudia.avalos@nyu.edu | +1 212 992 6541.
