Claude Y. Legault is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Sherbrooke, where he has progressed from Assistant Professor (2008-2013) to Associate Professor (2013-2018) and Full Professor (2018-present). His research integrates experimental organic synthesis with computational chemistry to develop efficient synthetic methodologies, emphasizing hypervalent iodine chemistry and machine learning applications.
He earned his B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Sherbrooke (1999) and Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Université de Montréal (2005) under Professor André B. Charette, followed by an NSERC postdoctoral fellowship with Professor Kendall N. Houk at UCLA (2006-2007).
Legault's work bridges computational prediction and practical synthesis, focusing on stereoselective construction of nitrogen heterocycles and novel hypervalent iodine reagents. His group develops broadly applicable methods while leveraging computational tools to understand reaction selectivities.
His extensive recognition includes:
- NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplement (2019)
- Faculty Teaching Award (2018)
- Thieme Chemistry Journal Awardee (2014)
- NSERC postdoctoral fellowship (2006-2007)
- Governor General Gold Medal (2006)
He leads the CYL Lab (@CYL_Lab, @HyperIodine), maintains active industry collaborations, and has delivered over 15 international invited talks including at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (2023) and ISXB6 in Dubrovnik (2024).
