Claude Gravel, Ph.D., is a Professor and Director of the Gene Transfer Laboratory at Université Laval's Faculty of Medicine. He specializes in combining gene therapy and immunology to develop experimental treatments for neurodegenerative disorders like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and retinal degeneration. A pioneer in using viral vectors for gene delivery in animal models, he co-founded the Molecular Tools Platform at the Neurophotonics Center, supporting multidisciplinary research.
Research Trends: His recent work focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, particularly ALS and retinitis, using gene therapy and antibody-based interventions. Studies include targeting TDP-43, modulating LRRK2 kinase activity, and exploring microglial phenotypes in disease progression. Publications highlight single-chain antibodies, lysosomal function, and neuroprotective strategies.
Scientific Contributions:
- Developed viral vector systems for gene transfer in motor neuron and retinal diseases.
- Investigated immunological tools to combat proteinopathies like alpha-synuclein and TDP-43 aggregates.
- Co-founder of the Molecular Tools Platform, enabling advanced research infrastructure.
