Clarissa Rile Hayward

Dr. Clarissa Rile Hayward is Professor of Political Science at Washington University in St. Louis. Her research examines social power, democratic institutions, and the construction of racial identities.

She authored How Americans Make Race (2013), which won the APSA Urban Politics Best Book Award, and De-Facing Power (2000). Her work analyzes how laws, policies, and spatial arrangements perpetuate inequality.

As Dean's Fellow for Policies, Dr. Hayward leads initiatives to enhance faculty mentorship and equity in promotion processes. She has held fellowships at Harvard's Safra Center and the Institute for Advanced Study.
