Clare Wenham

Dr Clare Wenham is an Associate Professor of Global Health Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), affiliated with the Department of Health Policy. She directs the MSc in Global Health Policy and contributes to the LSE Global Health Initiative. Her expertise spans global health security, governance, and the political dimensions of epidemic preparedness. With a PhD in International Relations from Aberystwyth University, her research integrates public policy, international relations, and public health.

Her work focuses on global health security frameworks, including the WHO’s role, financing mechanisms, and the interplay between global health security and universal health coverage. She critiques over-securitization of health and explores feminist理论 contributions to disease governance. Notable studies include analyses of pandemic responses in Panama, Cuba, Thailand, and the UK, alongside gendered impacts of policies such as those during Zika and COVID-19.

Clare advises the WHO, UK Parliament, and European Parliament, contributing to gender-focused policy reforms. She co-leads the Gender & COVID Project and collaborates with UN Women. Her research highlights systemic inequities, such as women’s disproportionate burdens in caregiving and economic participation during health crises.

Recent articles emphasize gender transformation in pandemic policy, urban health security agendas, and critiques of proposed pandemic treaties. She advocates for equity-centered global health governance and challenges gaps in gender inclusion within international agreements.
