Dr. Clare Johnson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Design at the School of Arts, University of the West of England. She teaches undergraduate and postgraduate Visual Culture programmes and supervises PhD students while leading the New Starter Researcher Development Scheme for the School of Arts.
Her primary research focuses on:
- Feminist approaches to art history
- Inter-generational perspectives in contemporary art and visual culture
- Maternal studies and visual representation
She has published extensively on artists including Tracey Emin, Vanessa Beecroft, Eleanor Antin, Carolee Schneemann, Yoko Ono, Marina Abramovic, Eti Wade, and Lena Simic.
Johnson co-leads the 'Ways of Writing in Art and Design' (WOW) research network and serves on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Gender Studies, demonstrating significant scholarly engagement.
She co-directs the Visual and Material Practices Research Group (VAMP), a cross-disciplinary collective of art and design practitioners, historians, and theorists exploring visuality and material culture.
