Clare Hickman is Reader in Environmental and Medical History at Newcastle University's School of History, Classics and Archaeology. Her interdisciplinary research examines human-environment relationships through historical lenses, focusing on therapeutic landscapes, hospital gardens, and sensory experiences of nature.
As Principal Investigator for the AHRC-funded 'In All Our Footsteps' project, she investigates rights of way connections to wellbeing. Hickman's monograph 'The Doctor’s Garden: Medicine, Science, and Horticulture in Britain' explores 18th-century medical practitioners' roles in botanical development. She co-directs the 'Unlocking Landscapes' network bridging policy and academic sectors.
