Dr Hayes-Brady's research explores American fiction from the late 20th and early 21st centuries, with a particular emphasis on David Foster Wallace’s engagement with communication, solipsism, and embodiment. She investigates performative sexuality, queer resistance through burlesque, and the adaptation of literature into film. Her work also extends to medical humanities, where she examines narrative and poetry as tools for clinician well-being and patient care, particularly during crises like the pandemic. She is deeply involved in public engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Her recent publications reflect a strong trend in blending literary analysis with philosophical inquiry and social critique. Themes include identity formation, narrative voice, gender performance, and the ethics of representation. She frequently publishes on Wallace’s literary and philosophical legacy, while also contributing to discussions on adolescent mental health, dystopian fiction, and the role of storytelling in medicine.
Dr Hayes-Brady has received research funding, including the MindReading grant from UCD’s College of Arts and Humanities (2020–2021), supporting podcasting and interdisciplinary dialogue on narrative in medicine. She is actively involved in academic service, including peer review for journals such as MFS Modern Fiction Studies and Medical Humanities.
She supervises PhD students and has coordinated numerous modules, including Contemporary US Genre Fiction, Girlhood in 21stC American YA, and Narrative Care & Medicine. She is a founding member and chair of the Burlesque and Cabaret Research Network and serves on the committee of the International Society for David Foster Wallace Studies. Her leadership in the MindReading project highlights her commitment to public humanities and interdisciplinary scholarship.
