Clare Elwell is Professor at the Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development, School of Psychological Sciences, Birkbeck, University of London. Her research focuses on developing innovative optical systems for monitoring and imaging the human body, particularly using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in clinical and developmental contexts.
Her education includes:
- B.Sc. in Physics with Medical Physics from University of Exeter (1988)
- M.Phil in Measurements for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea from University of Exeter (1991)
- Ph.D. in Cerebral Haemodynamics Measurement from University College London (1995)
Her research examines brain development in infants, functional activation studies across age groups, and cerebral circulation modelling. She leads multidisciplinary teams applying NIRS in clinical settings and global health projects, including the landmark BRIGHT project studying brain development in Gambian infants.
Her recent publications focus on neurodevelopmental assessment tools, infant brain imaging methodologies, and clinical applications of optical topography. Research trends show consistent emphasis on translational neuroscience and developmental disorders.
Honors include:
- UCL Provost's Prize for Public Engagement (2012)
- MRC Science Suffragette Award (2013)
- Inspirational Teacher Award (2014)
- WISE Research Award (2016)
She directs the ToddlerLab research facility and leads multiple international collaborations. Public engagement activities include exhibits at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition and science communication through BBC programs.
