Clara Serrano is a Senior Engineer and Plant Manager at the Energy and Bioproducts Research Institute (EBRI) within the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Aston University. She manages a 0.5 MW pilot plant and oversees procurement, project management, and health and safety. Her research focuses on thermal conversion of waste materials, biofuel engines, combined heat and power systems, vehicle-to-grid technologies, and smart cities.
Education includes a PhD in Chemical Engineering (cum laude) from the University of Castilla-La Mancha, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Leeds. She previously served as Head of the Biomass Department at the Science and Technology Park of Albacete, Spain, where she led pilot plant development.
Research interests span biomass gasification, producer gas combustion, and electric vehicle innovation. She received the Electric Vehicle Innovation & Excellence Awards (EVIEs) in 2020. Teaching includes leading EBRI’s Practical Process Engineering course and overseeing lab demonstrations in thermal engineering and bioenergy.
Aston University collaborations include the VIGIL Project, addressing grid harmonics and EV battery degradation. She holds certifications in Lean Six Sigma, quality management, and leadership in higher education.
