Prof. Dr. Clara Saraceno is a tenure-track Professor at Ruhr University Bochum’s Department of Physics and Astronomy, affiliated with the Cluster of Excellence RESOLV (Ruhr Explores Solvation). Her work focuses on developing advanced ultrafast laser technologies and high-power terahertz radiation sources. Key projects include ERC-funded research on novel terahertz sources for studying water molecules and high-energy laser interactions.
Education: Born in Argentina (1983), she earned a dual degree in France and a physics doctorate from ETH Zurich (2012). Postdoctoral work at ETH Zurich and the University of Neuchâtel preceded her appointment at Ruhr University in 2016. She received the Sofja Kovalevskaja Prize (2015) and an ERC Starting Grant (2019), plus a Proof of Concept Grant.
Research Interests: She pioneers cutting-edge laser systems for terahertz generation, including lithium niobate-based single-cycle sources and high-power thin-disk lasers. Her innovations target applications in spectroscopy, nonlinear optics, and ultrafast dynamics. Recent work emphasizes energy-scaling of Ho:YAG lasers and gas-dynamic filamentation studies.
Publications Highlight: Her 2025 work demonstrates record-breaking THz sources (643 mW average power) and ultrafast Ho:CALGO lasers (sub-100 fs pulses). She also advances multipass cell compression techniques for high-energy laser pulses.
Awards: Beyond ERC grants, her Sofja Kovalevskaja Prize (Alexander von Humboldt Foundation) supports her research trajectory in Germany.
Grants/Advising: ERC Starting Grant (€1.5M) funds THz source development. She mentors a lab team advancing laser technologies and trains students in ultrafast optics. Current projects explore organic crystal-based THz systems and GHz-repetition-rate lasers.
Labs: Leads the RESOLV-affiliated lab specializing in laser-driven THz generation and ultrafast spectroscopy. Collaborates internationally on spintronic emitters and THz-TDS systems.
