Clara Calvo

Clara Calvo is a Professor of English Studies at the Department of English Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Murcia. She earned her PhD in English Studies from the University of Nottingham in 1990 and has held continuous academic appointments since 1988, progressing from various teaching positions to her current role as Full Professor since 2007.

Her research interests focus on Shakespeare studies, memory studies, First World War cultural history, and commemoration practices. Calvo has made significant contributions to understanding how Shakespeare is remembered and celebrated across different cultures and historical contexts, particularly examining the relationship between Shakespeare and global conflicts like the First World War.

Her scholarly output demonstrates a consistent focus on commemoration practices and Shakespearean reception, with particular emphasis on European contexts. Calvo's work bridges literary analysis with cultural memory studies, examining how anniversaries, festivals, and memorials shape our understanding of Shakespeare's legacy.

Calvo has served as Deputy Dean at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Murcia and has held leadership positions in multiple international academic organizations. As Principal Investigator, she has secured significant research funding from the Fundación Séneca and the Spanish Plan Nacional de I+D+i for projects examining Shakespeare and the First World War, as well as Shakespearean anniversaries and festival cultures.

She currently serves as President of SEDERI (Sociedad Hispano-Portugesa de Estudios del Renacimiento Inglés) and as a trustee and member of the Executive Committee of the International Shakespeare Association. Calvo also contributes to the academic community through editorial work as a member of the editorial board of SEDERI, the Board of Referees of Atlantis, and as associate editor of Cahiers Élisabéthains.
