Claire Wood is an Associate Professor in Victorian Literature at the University of Leicester's School of Arts, Media and Communication. Her research focuses on Victorian death culture, exploring contradictions in societal attitudes toward death through literary analysis and historical contexts. She authored Dickens and the Business of Death (Cambridge UP, 2015), examining economic and cultural dimensions of death in Victorian England. Dr. Wood co-led the AHRC-funded Dickens Code project (2021–2023), which decoded Charles Dickens' shorthand writing and won THE Research Project of the Year 2022.
Her current project, 'Dead Funny', investigates death comedy in 19th-century literature. She is passionate about public engagement, leading initiatives like the Sensory Stories project, which trained researchers to use multisensory methods for communicating complex ideas. Previously, Wood worked at the University of York and the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement in Bristol.
