Claire Warden is a Professor of Performance and Physical Culture and the Associate Dean for Research & Innovation at Loughborough University’s School of Design and Creative Arts. Her academic journey includes a PhD from the University of Edinburgh (2007), supported by a University Scholarship, followed by postdoctoral work at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities. She previously held roles at the University of Lincoln and De Montfort University before joining Loughborough in 2018 as part of their Excellence 100 campaign.
Her research focuses on performance studies, modernism, and the intersection of physical culture with cultural history. Notable areas include professional wrestling as a performance form, avant-garde theatre, and the historical influence of Russian modernism on British theatre. Her work often bridges interdisciplinary boundaries, incorporating cultural studies, body politics, and sociological analysis.
Recent publications (2020–2024) reflect her exploration of professional wrestling’s cultural significance, avant-garde performance traditions, and the historical context of modernist theatre. These studies highlight themes like risk, agency, and the body as a site of cultural expression.
