Claire Smith is a Professor of Archaeology at Flinders University's College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. With over 25 years of fieldwork in the Northern Territory, she works closely with Barunga, Ngadjuri, and Adnymathahna communities. As co-lead of the Australian Hub for the Center for Braiding Indigenous Knowledges and Science, she integrates Aboriginal epistemologies into archaeological practice.

Her research bridges Indigenous knowledge systems with archaeology, focusing on rock art analysis, socially mediated terrorism, and decolonizing methodologies. She pioneered the Barunga Community Archaeology Field School and co-edited the Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology, which became Springer's most cited work in its field.
Recent publications examine global Indigenous archaeologies, cultural heritage sustainability, and the social impact of archaeological ethics. She received the 2024 SAA Presidential Recognition Award and 2018 Lucy Mair Medal for community-engaged research.
