Dr. Claire Lucas is the Head of Medical Sciences at the University of Chester Medical School and holds the academic rank of Associate Professor within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Society. Her expertise lies in biomarker research, particularly in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). She has over 15 years of experience as a scientist in the NHS and has led academic programs such as the MSc Haematology and MRes Medical Science. Her research focuses on identifying prognostic biomarkers, therapeutic targets, and strategies for treatment-free remission in hematologic malignancies.
Dr. Lucas earned her PhD in Haematology (part-time) from the University of Liverpool, alongside a BSc in Physiology and a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
Her research portfolio combines translational and basic science, addressing critical questions such as predicting disease progression to blast crisis, optimizing treatment discontinuation, and eradicating leukaemic stem cells. Key findings include the identification of CIP2A as a predictive biomarker for CML progression and the exploration of novel therapeutic targets like the SET-PP2A complex in AML.
Publications highlight her contributions to biomarker validation, therapeutic resistance mechanisms, and molecular profiling in leukemias. Her work aims to improve clinical outcomes through personalized medicine approaches.
