Claire Luby serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences & Plant Pathology at Montana State University's College of Agriculture. Her work bridges plant breeding, horticulture, and sustainable seed systems with emphasis on fruit crop improvement and open-source agricultural innovation.
Her educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Plant Breeding, University of Wisconsin-Madison (2016)
- M.S. in Plant Breeding, University of Wisconsin-Madison (2013)
- B.S. in Biology, Middlebury College (2010)
Research focuses on blueberry breeding for organic systems, fruit quality genetics, and open-source seed frameworks. She investigates anthocyanin accumulation, phenological traits, and sustainable production methods while developing educational approaches for indigenous foodways and pandemic-era horticulture instruction.
Recent publications (2013-2022) reveal consistent blueberry research leadership with expanding scope into educational innovation and open-source systems. Key themes include genetic analysis of fruit quality traits, participatory breeding methodologies, and curriculum development for sustainable agriculture.
Dr. Luby actively serves as Committee Member for the American Pomological Society Small Fruits Committee and Board Member for the Open Source Seed Initiative. She regularly reviews for Agriculture and Human Values and USDA AFRI grant panels.
Current projects include interseeding cover crops for organic vegetable farms (USDA NIFA), preventing fruit drop in haskaps (Montana Department of Agriculture), and remediating deicer-contaminated soils using native plants (Montana Department of Transportation). She also contributes to the MSU Horticulture Foundation's demonstration gardens.
