Claire Lawrence

Claire Lawrence is a Professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Nottingham. She is a Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society with a Certificate of Competence in Occupational Testing: Level A (Ref:T9692). Her work is primarily associated with the Risk Analysis, Social Processes and Health (RASPH) research group at the university.

Her research focuses on three main areas related to aggression:

• Individual Differences and Aggression: She developed the Situational Triggers of Aggressive Responses (STAR) scale to measure individual sensitivities to provocations and frustrations, and is evaluating its validity in experimental and offender populations.
• Aggression and Stereotypes: She examines how aggressive stereotypes influence attention, encoding, and memory of related information using various methodologies.
• Contextual influences on aggression perception: Her work includes studies on prison crowding, environmental influences, and car type effects on perceptions of aggression and responsibility.

Her recent publications show a continued focus on aggression triggers, blood donation psychology, and workplace violence. She has developed cross-cultural applications of her STAR scale, with recent work on the Greek Standardization of the Situational Triggers of Aggressive Responses (STARGR).

Professor Lawrence has successfully supervised multiple PhD students including Julia Fossi (1999-2003), Kate Threapleton (2002-2006), Chris Beeley (2004-), and Nadja Heym (2005-). She has secured significant research funding including an HSE grant examining lay perceptions of occupational diseases and an ESRC CASE Studentship award for Chris Beeley with the DSPD unit at Rampton Secure Hospital.

Her laboratory work focuses on aggression triggers, with collaborations extending to forensic settings including Rampton Hospital and the DSPD program. Current projects examine the relationship between psychopathy and empathy, perspective taking, and risk taking in general populations.
