Claire Langhamer is a Professor of Modern History at the University of London and Director of the Institute of Historical Research. Previously, she held roles at the University of Sussex (2014–2021), including Professor of Modern British History. Her research focuses on social and cultural history, particularly emotions, gender, and everyday life in twentieth-century Britain. She holds a BA from Manchester University (1991) and a PhD from the University of Central Lancashire (1996).
Her work integrates life writing and oral history, notably through collaborations with the Mass Observation Archive. Key publications include Class of ’37 (2021), Total War: An Emotional History (2020), and The English in Love (2013). Current projects include a book on Feelings at Work in Modern Britain for OUP.
