Claire Henchcliffe is the Stanley van den Noort Professor and Chair of Neurology at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine. Her research focuses on movement disorders, particularly Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor, with an emphasis on neurotoxicology, biomarkers, and cell-based therapies. She leads investigations into α-synuclein pathology, neurodegenerative mechanisms, and the development of novel therapeutic approaches, including stem cell transplantation.
Research Interests: Dr. Henchcliffe’s work spans clinical and translational research in neurology, with key areas including Parkinson’s disease pathogenesis, biomarker discovery, and the application of advanced imaging and cell therapy techniques. Her lab explores the role of environmental toxins (e.g., harmane) in neurological disorders and evaluates the efficacy of emerging treatments like bemdaneprocel (human embryonic stem cell-derived dopamine neurons).
Grants & Awards: Her research is supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including R01 NS042859 and P30 ES009089, among others. She contributes to large-scale initiatives such as the Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) and the All of Us Research Program.
Clinical Trials: Dr. Henchcliffe leads Phase I trials evaluating stem cell therapies for Parkinson’s disease, focusing on safety, tolerability, and clinical outcomes. Her work has demonstrated promising results in improving motor and non-motor symptoms through dopaminergic neuron transplantation.
Education & Mentorship: As Chair of Neurology, she oversees academic programs and mentors trainees in clinical neurology and translational research. Her lab actively engages in interdisciplinary collaborations to advance understanding of neurodegenerative diseases and develop innovative treatments.
