Dr. Claire Haggett is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology and Sustainable Development at the University of Edinburgh, working part-time (60%). She is affiliated with the School of Social and Political Science and the Department of Sociology. Her research focuses on social responses to renewable energy projects, particularly offshore wind energy, community benefits, environmental governance, and discourse analysis. She leads interdisciplinary projects such as the EPSRC-funded 'Offshore wind: Accelerating Impact in the Forth and Tay Region' and contributes to the UN Global Compact's Ocean Stewardship Coalition. Haggett teaches the sociology of sustainability and qualitative research methods, and serves as Cohort Lead for the MA in Sustainable Development. In 2024, she received the EUSA Teaching Award for 'Cohort Lead of the Year.'
Her research interests include renewable energy acceptance, community engagement strategies, public participation in planning, and the role of media in framing environmental issues. Current PhD supervision includes Henry Finn (transformative pedagogies) and Emma Yuen (retrofitting and tenure in Edinburgh). She welcomes supervision inquiries on renewable energy social responses and discourse analysis.
Key projects include collaborations on community benefit schemes, offshore wind-fisheries interactions, and net-positive biodiversity frameworks. Haggett has authored over 40 peer-reviewed articles and chapters, focusing on energy policy, environmental communication, and governance. Her work bridges academia and practice, addressing challenges in sustainable development and just transitions.
