Clair Yang is an Assistant Professor at the Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington. Her research focuses on political economy, economic history, and comparative politics, with a regional emphasis on China. She holds affiliations as a Research Fellow at the Bank of International Settlement (Switzerland) and a Non-resident Scholar at the 21st Century China Center (UC San Diego).
Education:
- Ph.D. in Managerial Economics and Strategy, Northwestern University (2016)
- B.S. in Mathematics, Peking University (China)
Research Interests: Long-run development, endogenous institutions, and China's political economy. Her forthcoming book The Political Economy of China’s Imperial Examination System (Cambridge University Press) explores historical institutional evolution. Methodologies include causal identification, game theory, and comparative historical analysis.
Teaching & Courses: Specializes in courses like Political Economy of China, Political Economy of Development, and Quantitative Methods.
Advising: Accepting MA students for 2025-2026 but not PhD students. Former postdoctoral scholar at MIT Sloan School of Management.
