Cisca Brier is a Lecturer in Dutch language and culture at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), affiliated with the Department of European Languages and Transcultural Studies within the Humanities Division. Her office is located in Royce Hall 327, and she holds weekly office hours on Wednesdays from 2:00pm to 3:00pm, with additional Zoom appointments available upon request.
Her research and teaching focus on Dutch language and culture, contributing to UCLA’s renowned Dutch Studies Program—the largest in the U.S.—which emphasizes both historical and contemporary dimensions of the Netherlands, Indonesia, and Belgium. The program collaborates with the University of Utrecht through faculty exchanges, graduate student mobility, and summer language programs.
While no specific awards are listed for Cisca Brier, the Dutch Studies Program itself benefits from distinguished faculty, visiting scholars, and post-doctoral fellows. Her role includes teaching Dutch language courses each quarter and supporting the program’s interdisciplinary offerings, including history, literature, art, and global contexts.
Collaborations with Utrecht University, directed by Ido de Haan and Arch Getty, enrich the program through shared resources and annual lectures like the Van Tilburg Lecture series. Seminars explore topics such as the Dutch Republic, Dutch imperialism, Indonesian post-independence studies, and modern art.
