Dr. Cirleen DeBlaere serves as Professor of Counseling Psychology in the College of Education and Human Development at Georgia State University (GSU), concurrently holding the position of Director of Faculty Development in the Office of Faculty Affairs since 2023. She previously served as Interim Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs until October 1, 2024, following Dr. Corrie Fountain's appointment at Clayton State University. Having joined GSU's faculty in 2013, she earned tenure and promotion to Professor through distinguished scholarly contributions.
Her educational credentials include a doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Florida, a master's degree in General Psychology from New York University, and a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Boston University.
Dr. DeBlaere's research program critically examines how marginalization stressors impact mental health outcomes while advancing frameworks for cultural humility in clinical practice and academic leadership. Her scholarship bridges counseling psychology with social justice imperatives, emphasizing systemic approaches to equity in mental healthcare delivery and institutional governance. This work has established her as a national thought leader in culturally responsive interventions.
Her exceptional contributions have earned significant recognition:
- Emerging Leader for Women in Psychology Award from the Committee for Women in Psychology of the American Psychological Association
- Fellow status in the American Psychological Association
Dr. DeBlaere has secured over $9 million in competitive federal and foundation grant funding to support her research initiatives. Through her leadership as Program Coordinator for the Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program and Senior Faculty Associate for Mentoring, she has shaped graduate training frameworks and institutional mentoring structures while advising numerous doctoral candidates in the field.
