Cillian McHugh is an Associate Professor at the University of Limerick, affiliated with the Department of Psychology and the Centre for Social Issues Research. His research focuses on moral psychology, particularly moral judgment, dumbfounding, and the intersection of morality with meaning and networks. He holds a Ph.D. (2018) and explores theoretical frameworks such as ecological psychology, embodiment, and dynamical systems.
Key research interests include moral categorization, decision-making, and the application of experimental methods to study morality across diverse contexts. McHugh has conducted cross-cultural studies on moral dumbfounding and collaborated internationally on projects like the International Climate Psychology Collaboration, involving 63 countries.
His work addresses global challenges such as climate change interventions and pandemic responses, emphasizing behavioral science and social cohesion. He has published over 20 articles, including studies on media-induced stress during lockdowns, climate change behavioral strategies, and the psychological impact of national identity during crises.
