Professor Ciaran Brady holds the position of Professor of Early Modern History and Historiography at Trinity College Dublin's Department of History. His work focuses on Irish and English history during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, particularly Anglo-Irish relations and Tudor governance strategies. He also studies the theory and practice of historiography, with notable contributions to Victorian historian James Anthony Froude's biography and the evolution of Irish historical narratives. Brady teaches undergraduate and postgraduate modules on early modern cultural history, historiography, and British-Irish relations.
His research includes projects like the Calendar of State Papers for 1556-65 and analyses of colonial policies, such as those of Sir Henry Sidney and Hugh O'Neill. He supervises research on early modern Ireland and historical writing. Publications span monographs, edited volumes, and over 40 articles addressing topics from Elizabethan Ireland to the intellectual legacies of colonial historians.
Brady's teaching emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to history, integrating cultural, political, and theoretical perspectives. His work bridges early modern primary sources with modern historiographical debates, offering critical insights into how historical narratives shape national identities.
