Christopher Wlezien is the Hogg Professor of Government at the University of Texas at Austin's College of Liberal Arts. He joined the university in 2013 after teaching at institutions including Oxford University (as Reader of Comparative Government), Temple University, and the University of Houston. He has held visiting positions at over 15 global institutions, including the European University Institute and the Technical University of Munich. His research focuses on public opinion dynamics, electoral systems, policy responsiveness, and media effects, with a particular emphasis on cross-national comparisons. He has authored influential books such as Degrees of Democracy (Cambridge University Press) and The Timeline of Presidential Elections (University of Chicago Press).
Wlezien's work integrates quantitative methods with substantive political questions, exploring how institutions shape voter behavior and policy outcomes. He co-founded the Oxford Spring School in Quantitative Methods and has led NSF-funded projects analyzing electoral dynamics across over 40 countries. His current research examines media coverage's role in mediating public policy responsiveness and the application of machine learning to political text analysis. In 2024, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, recognizing his contributions to political science.
He serves as a faculty affiliate of the Policy Agendas Project and the Center for European Studies. His editorial roles include co-editing the Journal of Elections, Public Opinion and Parties and serving on the editorial boards of multiple journals. His research spans electoral institutions, representation inequality, and the interplay between public opinion and policy, with datasets publicly available through his project sites.
