Christopher Witmore is the President’s Excellence in Research Professor of Archaeology and Classics at Texas Tech University, serving as Head of the Department of Classics & Modern Languages & Literatures. He holds a PhD from Stanford University (2005) and an MA from the University of Sheffield (1998). His research reorients archaeology to engage with present and future contexts, emphasizing object-oriented philosophy and the Anthropocene. Witmore has conducted fieldwork across Greece, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Romania, the UK, and the US. He is affiliated with the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work at Texas Tech.

Witmore’s research focuses on material culture, the intersection of archaeology and philosophy, and the role of objects in shaping human and nonhuman existence. Key contributions include Objects Untimely (2023) and Old Lands (2020), which explore object-oriented ontology and regional chorography.
His articles critically engage with the Anthropocene, materialism, and archaeological theory. Notable awards include the Texas Tech Parents Association’s Research Award (2024–2025) and a Senior Research Fellowship from the Norwegian Academy (2016–2017). Witmore’s interdisciplinary collaborations span archaeology, sociology, and digital humanities, reflecting his commitment to cross-disciplinary innovation.
He leads research initiatives on WWII prisoner-of-war camps (Sværholt) and the philosophical implications of archaeological objects. His work bridges academic scholarship with public engagement, emphasizing the relevance of archaeology to contemporary global challenges.
