Dr Christopher White is a Reader (Associate Professor) in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, where he serves as Head of the Centre for Water, Environment, Sustainability and Public Health. He leads the Engineering for Extremes research group, focusing on natural hazards, climate resilience, and compound event modeling.
- University: University of Strathclyde
- School: Faculty of Engineering
- Department: Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
- Academic Rank: Associate Professor
- External Position: Adjunct Senior Lecturer, University of Tasmania
His educational background includes a Doctor of Engineering and a Bachelor of Engineering in Environmental Engineering, both from the University of Southampton.
Christopher White’s research spans natural hazards, flood and drought risk, compound and cascading events, and subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) forecasting. He emphasizes the integration of climate science into decision-making through climate services and risk communication. His work supports disaster risk reduction, emergency management, and sustainable resource planning in a changing climate.
His recent publications highlight trends in compound event research, climate resilience, offshore renewable energy assessment, and operational meteorology. These works reflect a strong interdisciplinary focus on environmental extremes, risk modeling, and practical applications of climate predictions.
Scientific awards and recognition include:
- Resilient Australia Awards: National Winner (2012)
- Churchill Fellowship (2013)
- Resilient Australia Awards: State Commendation (2016)
Dr White actively supervises PhD students and leads multiple research projects, including the MEDiate project (Horizon Europe), the WWRP/WCRP S2S Prediction Project, and EPSRC-funded PhD research on climate risk scenarios for nuclear storage. He collaborates with institutions such as the Met Office and SEPA, and has secured funding from DSIT and internal university sources. His research group, Engineering for Extremes, fosters transdisciplinary collaboration. He also contributes to professional activities, including organizing the Strath Methods seminar series and speaking at World Water Day 2025.
