Christopher Tignor is an American composer, violinist, lecturer, and software engineer based in New York City, born March 15, 1976 in Morristown, New Jersey. His interdisciplinary career uniquely bridges classical and experimental music communities through emotionally charged scores and innovative live electroacoustic performance techniques that integrate acoustic instruments with digital processing in real-time.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. in music composition from Princeton University (2018), an M.S. in computer science from NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (2003), and a B.A. in creative writing from Bard College (1998), where he studied fiction and poetry with Pulitzer Prize-winning poet John Ashbery and composer Richard Teitelbaum.
Tignor's research interests revolve around the intersection of music composition, software engineering, and performance practice. He has developed a distinctive performance technique using tuning forks and custom software that processes violin sounds in real-time, creating what critics have described as 'a dense, nearly orchestral soundscape.' His work explores how spontaneous musical performance might be reinvented in the digital age, with particular focus on making computers coexist in harmony with acoustic instruments in live settings. Tignor creates all the performance software he uses, which he shares freely with the community.
His extensive discography reveals a consistent exploration of electroacoustic soundscapes that blend contemporary classical, post-rock, and electronic elements. Over time, his work has evolved from more traditional chamber compositions toward increasingly sophisticated integrations of software processing, with recent works featuring intricate violin processing techniques, kick drum-triggered synths, and innovative harmonic structures. His compositions often feature slow, heartrending lyricism alongside angular, high-energy passages that showcase his technical mastery.

- 'Absurdly talented' — The Guardian UK
Tignor has collaborated extensively with ensembles including The Knights, A Far Cry string orchestra, and Brooklyn Rider string quartet, performing at premiere venues including Carnegie's Zankel Hall. His collaborative spirit extends to working with artists at the boundaries of popular music such as Rachel Grimes, Helios, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, John Congleton, and This Will Destroy You. While working at Google as a software engineer since 2011, he continues to push the boundaries of electroacoustic performance through his custom software development and live presentations.
As a sponsored artist of both German tuning fork maker Wittner and audio software leader Antares (for his inventive application of Auto-Tune as a 'chorale' violin harmonizer), Tignor bridges industry partnerships with his artistic practice. He has presented his work and given lectures at international venues including the SOU Festival in Tbilisi, Georgia, the International Computer Music Conference in Daegu, Korea, and the Victor Hugo theater in Havana, Cuba.
