Christopher Sainsbury is an Associate Professor in Composition, Songwriting, and Australian Indigenous Music at the School of Music, The Australian National University (ANU). He is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Ngarra-burria First Peoples Composers Program, recognized nationally and internationally for advancing Indigenous representation in classical music. His roles include leadership in music education and community engagement, with a focus on Indigenous cultural narratives and regional musical traditions.
Education: Dip Mus (1984-86), BA in Composition (1988), Grad Dip Ed (1991), M Mus (1999-2000), PhD (2009-2012). He has held positions such as Head of Arts & Media at the Eora Centre, an Indigenous tertiary college in Sydney.
Research interests span Regionalism in music, contemporary Indigenous music practices, guitar composition, surf music, and culturally-informed education. His works include orchestral commissions, albums, and academic publications, such as the 2024 co-authored chapters in Decolonising and Indigenising Music Education and Cambridge Companion to Music in Australia.
Awards include the 2020 APRA Art Music National Luminary Award. His projects include the First Nations Space to Create residency and The Two Way Project, fostering Indigenous community partnerships. He actively collaborates with institutions like the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and ABC Classic.
