Professor Christopher R. Moran is Deputy Vice-Provost (Research) for the Faculty of Social Sciences and Professor of US National Security at the University of Warwick’s Politics and International Studies (PAIS) department. He completed his BA (2003), MA (2004), and PhD (2009) at Warwick, followed by postdoctoral research including a Kluge Fellowship at the Library of Congress (2008-2011) and a British Academy Fellowship (2011-2014). His research bridges International Security, Diplomatic History, and Intelligence Studies, with a focus on British and American secret services, especially the CIA’s role in US foreign policy. He has authored two monographs, including Classified: Secrecy and the State in Modern Britain (2013), which won the St Ermin’s Intelligence Book Award, and edited numerous volumes. His current project examines the Nixon-Kissinger-CIA relationship during the Vietnam War and Cold War diplomacy. Moran co-edits Intelligence and National Security and collaborates with institutions like the International Spy Museum. He has supervised 10 PhD students and contributed to REF impact case studies on intelligence oversight.
His teaching in 2025/26 includes the module 'Vigilant State: Understanding Secret Intelligence.' Moran’s work spans academic and public spheres, blending historical analysis with contemporary policy implications. His awards include Fellowships from the Royal Historical Society and Higher Education Academy, and he leads international research initiatives like the Global and National Security Institute fellowship (2025-2028).
