Christopher R. Berry is the William J. and Alicia Townsend Friedman Professor at the Harris School of Public Policy and the College at the University of Chicago. He directs the Center for Municipal Finance and specializes in public policy, political economy, and local government finance. His research explores electoral politics, legislative behavior, urban policy, and the interplay between institutions and fiscal systems. Berry has co-authored influential books like Theory and Credibility (2021) and Imperfect Union (2009), which critiques multilevel governance structures.
His recent work includes analyzing shelter-in-place policies during the pandemic, leadership effects across domains, and property tax reforms. Berry’s work bridges empirical analysis with policy relevance, addressing topics such as congressional committee dynamics, judicial implementation, and gender disparities in political representation. He has been recognized with the Alan Rosenthal Prize (2008) for his contributions to political science. His research spans over three decades, with a focus on institutional design, fiscal policy, and the practical implications of theoretical models.
