معرفی
Dr. Christopher Pierce is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Biology at the University of the Incarnate Word since 2022. He holds a Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from The University of Texas at San Antonio (2012), an M.S. (2007), and a B.S. (2005) in Biology. His research focuses on fungal infections caused by Candida albicans, particularly biofilm formation, filamentation, and the development of antifungal therapies targeting these virulence factors. He leads a lab training undergraduate students in independent research, with student presentations at regional and national conferences. His work emphasizes identifying anti-virulence compounds and minimizing resistance potential.
Education
- Ph.D. Cell and Molecular Biology, UTSA, 2012
- M.S. Biology, UTSA, 2007
- B.S. Biology, Missouri Southern State University, 2005
Research Interests
Dr. Pierce investigates mechanisms of C. albicans biofilm formation and filamentation, aiming to develop novel anti-fungal therapies. His lab screens small molecules for anti-biofilm/anti-filamentation activity, characterizes mechanism-of-action, and evaluates resistance potential. He prioritizes translational approaches to combat drug-resistant fungal infections.
Grants & Mentorship
He mentors undergraduate researchers, fostering their development through lab work and conference participation. His lab has contributed to over 30 publications, emphasizing collaborative drug discovery efforts.
Labs & Teams
His research group at UIW focuses on undergraduate training in medical mycology and antifungal drug development, contributing to both academic and clinical advancements.
