Dr. Christopher Phelps is a Research Fellow in the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance at Curtin University (Faculty of Business and Law). His research focuses on Australian housing policy, intergenerational wealth inequality, and urban economics. He holds a PhD from Curtin University, awarded the 2021 Peter Barrington Gold Medal for exceptional research in land economy studies.
Phelps specializes in economic modeling of housing outcomes, particularly using panel-data analysis and datasets like HILDA and dwelling price records. His work explores housing affordability barriers, policy effectiveness, and demographic impacts such as aging populations and population aging. Collaborators include UCLA’s Dr. William Clark, Sydney University’s Dr. Stephen Whelan, and RMIT’s Emeritus Prof. Gavin Wood.
Key research themes include intergenerational wealth divides, mortgage debt utilization patterns, and spatial equity in housing markets. His recent work analyzes how younger generations face disproportionate housing challenges compared to older cohorts, emphasizing policy interventions to address these disparities.
Phelps has published widely in journals like Population, Space and Place and Research on Aging, and contributes policy-relevant insights through The Conversation and CEDA reports. His 2023 work on geographic reference income’s impact on well-being highlights the intersection of income perception and spatial economics.
