Christopher Nguyen

Dr. Christopher Nguyen, PhD, serves as the Director of the Cardiovascular Innovation Research Center and MRI Research at the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute at Cleveland Clinic. He holds the position of Associate Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at CWRU. Previously, Dr. Nguyen held faculty positions at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dr. Nguyen's research focuses on developing next-generation cardiac MRI techniques, evaluation of novel regenerative therapies, patient-specific biomimetic applications (such as digital twins), and integration of machine learning into cardiovascular engineering applications. His work bridges cardiology, biomedical engineering, and radiology to rapidly translate novel technologies into direct clinical applications. His laboratory's publications demonstrate expertise in diffusion tensor imaging, cardiac microstructure analysis, biomimetic engineering, and AI applications in cardiovascular medicine.

Dr. Nguyen's recent publications show a strong trend toward integrating advanced imaging techniques with AI and machine learning to improve cardiac diagnostics and treatment. His work spans from fundamental physics of cardiac imaging to clinical applications in heart failure, cardiomyopathy, and regenerative therapies. The research demonstrates increasing collaboration across disciplines including cardiology, radiology, biomedical engineering, and computer science.

Dr. Nguyen serves as Principal Investigator on several National Institutes of Health-funded studies focused on developing innovative cardiovascular techniques and assessing heart failure treatments. His laboratory receives research support from multiple NIH institutes (NIAMS, NEI, NICHD), The Marfan Foundation, The Arthritis Foundation, Sabrina's Foundation, Velosano, Yamanouchi USA Foundation, and the Allen Distinguished Investigator Program. He actively mentors researchers across multiple disciplines and collaborates extensively with clinicians and engineers to translate imaging technologies into clinical practice.

Dr. Nguyen founded and leads the Cardiovascular Innovation Research Center (CIRC), which operates at the intersection of cardiology, biomedical engineering, and radiology. The laboratory collaborates closely with the Therapeutic Technology Design & Development Lab at MIT led by Professor Ellen Roche to develop biomimetic cardiac devices and patient-specific biomechanical virtual 'twin' hearts for personalized modeling of patients with heart disease.
