Prof. Christopher Neuhaus is a Deputy Medical Director and Senior Physician in the Department of Anesthesiology at Heidelberg University Hospital. As an adjunct professor at Heidelberg University’s Medical Faculty, he specializes in patient safety, simulation-based training, and human factors in healthcare. He leads the Heidelberg Anesthesiology and Emergency Simulation Center (HANS) and the Patient Safety and Simulation Working Group. His roles include overseeing anesthesia services for general, visceral, and transplant surgery. He has extensive experience in critical incident analysis, contributing to national and international guidelines on patient safety, including standards for in-flight medical emergencies and spaceflight CPR. Neuhaus holds advanced qualifications in human factors and systems safety, and has directed the European Patient Safety Masterclass since 2019. His research emphasizes interdisciplinary crisis management, obstetric teamwork dynamics, and medical device safety.
Education & Career: Completed his habilitation (2020) on human factors in anesthesiology and earned a Master’s in Human Factors and Systems Safety (2019). Served as Head of Anesthesia at the Heidelberg Head Clinic (2016–2021) and has held leadership roles in the German Society of Aerospace Medicine (DGLRM) and European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC).
Key Contributions: Developed the eGENA decision aid for anesthesia crises, led studies on ventilation device safety, and pioneered CPR protocols for microgravity environments. His work bridges clinical practice, simulation training, and aerospace medicine to enhance perioperative and emergency care safety.
