Christopher L. Cahill is a Professor of Chemistry and International Affairs at George Washington University (GWU), where he has been a full-time faculty member since 2000. He leads the Cahill Research Group, focusing on solid-state and materials chemistry, crystallography, and nuclear forensics. His expertise spans f-element chemistry, nuclear science curriculum development, and science policy.
Educated at SUNY Fredonia (BS, 1993) and SUNY-Stony Brook (PhD, 1999), Cahill has held postdoctoral and visiting positions at Notre Dame, Carnegie Institution, Argonne National Lab, and Los Alamos National Lab. He has been awarded the NSF CAREER Award (2004), Bender Teaching Award (2005), Fulbright Scholarship (2008), and Trachtenberg Prize (2013).
His research investigates uranium species behavior, lanthanide-based sensors, and low-dimensional hybrid materials. Recent work includes nuclear forensics for nonproliferation and curriculum development for non-technical audiences. Cahill teaches courses in general chemistry and nuclear materials policy.
Key contributions include over 120 peer-reviewed papers, structural analysis of actinide complexes, and roles in professional organizations like the American Crystallographic Association. His lab emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to materials science and policy-relevant applications.
