Peter C. Burns is the Dorini Family Professor of Energy Studies and Henry Massman Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences at the University of Notre Dame, where he also holds a Concurrent Professorship in Chemistry and Biochemistry. His research focuses on actinide chemistry and materials science, with particular emphasis on uranium, neptunium, and plutonium compounds. Burns directs significant research centers including the Energy Frontier Research Center on Materials Science of Actinides and previously directed the Center for Sustainable Energy at Notre Dame.
Dr. Burns' research interests span the solid state and environmental chemistry of heavy metals, particularly actinides. His work encompasses structural studies of actinide compounds, development of structural hierarchies for actinide materials, applications to nuclear waste disposal and environmental remediation, studies of actinide materials under extreme environments, uranyl peroxide cage cluster chemistry, and mineralogy and crystallography of uranium minerals. His group has discovered numerous new uranyl minerals and developed innovative approaches to actinide cluster synthesis and characterization.
Burns' recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on uranyl peroxide chemistry, actinide materials under extreme conditions, and applications to nuclear energy and waste management. His work bridges fundamental chemistry with practical applications in nuclear energy and environmental protection, with particular emphasis on understanding actinide behavior at the nanoscale.
Among his numerous honors, Burns is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2023) and recipient of the Peacock Medal from the Mineralogical Association of Canada (2016). His research has been recognized with multiple awards including the Mineralogical Society of America Award (2001) and the Donath Medal of the Geological Society of America (1999).
Burns has advised numerous graduate students and postdoctoral researchers who have gone on to successful careers at institutions including Los Alamos National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and various universities worldwide. His research group operates state-of-the-art actinide laboratories with specialized equipment for handling radioactive materials and advanced characterization capabilities.
The Burns group maintains a collaborative environment with shared laboratory facilities including radiological fume hoods, glove boxes, multiple X-ray diffractometers, spectroscopic equipment, and calorimetry systems. Their work often involves collaboration with national laboratories and international research institutions, focusing on fundamental actinide chemistry with applications to nuclear energy, waste management, and environmental protection.
