Christopher Lüthgens

Christopher Lüthgens is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Applied Geology, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), where he leads the Luminescence Dating Laboratory. His academic journey includes a habilitation in Geomorphology and Quaternary Geochronology (BOKU, 2018), a PhD from Free University of Berlin (2011), and foundational studies in Geography and English.

Research spans glacial systems, Quaternary geochronology, and landscape evolution, with specialized focus on luminescence dating applications in geomorphology, paleoenvironmental reconstruction, and ice-sheet dynamics. Recent work explores Patagonian glaciation, Alpine sediment provenance, and desert oasis hydroarchaeology.

Publications emphasize methodological advances in geochronology and integrative analyses of climate-landscape-human interactions, particularly in high-mountain and coastal environments across Europe, South America, and Asia.

• Woldstedt Prize (DEUQUA, 2012) for outstanding Quaternary research

Projects & Leadership: Leads multiple international projects on glacial chronologies (e.g., Cordillera Darwin ice dynamics, Andean dune systems) and directs BOKU's luminescence lab. Secured funding from Austrian/Foreign agencies for fieldwork across 10+ countries.

Academic Service: Extensive conference presentations (120+), editorial roles, and supervision of theses in geochronology and geomorphology.
