Christopher Johnston is a Professor of Political Science and Sociology at Duke University's Trinity College of Arts & Sciences, and Co-Director of the Worldview Lab at the Kenan Institute for Ethics. He holds a Ph.D. from Stony Brook University (2011). His research focuses on the psychological underpinnings of political behavior, including public opinion dynamics, ideological motivations, and the intersection of cognitive processes with political engagement. Notable works include Curbing the Court (2020) and Open versus Closed (2017), examining judicial legitimacy and personality-driven policy preferences. He has received awards such as the Robert E. Lane Book Award and has led grants on topics like political polarization in religious institutions and survey methodology innovations. His teaching spans political behavior, methodology, and judicial politics, blending theoretical insights with empirical rigor.
Research highlights include studies on cognitive fatigue's impact on political participation, the role of negativity bias in ideology, and the capacity of voters to forecast candidate behavior. His interdisciplinary approach bridges political science, sociology, and psychology, addressing contemporary challenges in democratic governance and polarization.
