Christopher Hernandez

Christopher Hernandez serves as Professor in Residence in Bioengineering at UC Berkeley and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Bioengineering & Therapeutic Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where he also directs the Health Innovations Via Engineering (HIVE) laboratory.

His research centers on biomechanics with emphasis on musculoskeletal systems, microbe-material interactions, and microscopic organisms. Key investigations include microbiome influences on bone health and joint replacement infections, bacterial responses to mechanical stress/strain, and engineered living materials development. Primary research domains span biomaterials, nanotechnology, cell/tissue engineering, and microbial biomechanics.

As HIVE Director, Hernandez leads interdisciplinary engineering initiatives targeting orthopaedic challenges and infection prevention through innovative material science and biomechanical approaches.
